Most Mainers who don’t owe federal income tax are working and paying a slew of other taxes, including federal payroll taxes and state and local taxes. The idea that they’ve got no “skin in the game” is wrong. They pay taxes at the pump, at the checkout counter and to the local tax assessor.
What about the rest of Mainers who don’t owe federal income tax and aren’t working? The vast majority of them are disabled, elderly, or students. They are also paying state and local taxes; mostly property and sales taxes.
The idea that there’s a giant population of freeloaders in Maine is simply not based in reality.
