King, Collins among bipartisan lawmakers backing compromise relief package

One of the main sticking points is whether the package will include a provision to shield employers from liability if a worker contracts coronavirus at work. The current draft includes a temporary shield, though corporate immunity is a non-starter for many progressive lawmakers and worker advocates.

Commenting on the temporary provision, James Myall, a policy analyst with the Maine Center for Economic Policy, wrote on Twitter: “Totally unnecessary and actively harmful in my opinion. Having said that, the urgency to make a deal to help a lot of folks who are suffering is pretty high.”
