The window for balancing Maine’s tax code this session may be closing

Proponents said amending Maine’s income tax is the most direct way to inject more fairness into the state’s tax code, while helping to fund critical needs such as housing, social support services, healthcare, child care and other important priorities.

“The income tax is also the fairest way to raise revenue to pay for the things we all need because those with greater ability to pay are responsible for paying more,” Maura Pillsbury, a tax policy analyst at the Maine Center for Economic Policy, told members of the legislature’s Taxation Committee in March.

“The income tax also helps to balance out the sales and property tax which asks more of those with the least ability to pay,” she said.
