August Employment Report Provides “Further Evidence that Job Growth in Maine is Non-existent”

Augusta, Maine (Friday, September 21, 2012) Garrett Martin, Executive Director of the Maine Center for Economic Policy (MECEP), issued the following statement concerning the August employment report released today by the Maine Department of Labor.  The August unemployment rate for Maine was 7.6%.

“This report is further evidence that job growth in Maine is non-existent. While the unemployment rate for August is unchanged from July, an additional 2,763 people have joined the ranks of the unemployed over the last four months and another 4,464 people have dropped out of the labor force. With nearly 54,000 Mainers looking for work, we need leadership in Augusta and Washington who won’t hold our economy hostage but take action now to invest in job creation and economic growth.”
