“The strong bipartisan support for this bill is encouraging, but it is only a down payment on what we need to get Maine and America’s unemployed back to work and shift our economy back into high gear,” said MECEP Executive Director Christopher “Kit” St. John. “Congress must move forward immediately to extend unemployment benefits set to expire this week and to relieve states like Maine of the financial burden Medicaid and other federal programs impose. We look to Maine’s congressional delegation to provide the bipartisan leadership toward these objectives that they have shown in response to the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s.”
MECEP has worked closely with legislators in both Washington and Augusta to advance efforts toward economic recovery. Recently, MECEP released an analysis that projected the loss of 7,000 to 10,000 jobs from proposed state budget cuts to education and health care services.
