The Bangor Daily News was the source of a national uproar on Monday when it reprinted a deeply-edited, heavily-sanitized version of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
The discrepancy was first pointed out by historian Kevin Kruse on Twitter and amplified by others including left-wing writer Parker Molloy, who described the edits as “har[d] to reconcile.” However, as James Myall of the Maine Center for Economic Policy pointed out, the paper has for years been running this same editorial.
