Across the state, the number of unionized workers has been decreasing. In 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 9.2 percent of Maine workers were members of a union, which was more than a 3 percent decrease in membership since 2021.
“You see a really strong wave of labor organizing activity,” Maine Center for Economic Policy analyst Arthur Philips said. “Unfortunately, the laws in this country are very restrictive, and it’s very hard to actually successfully organize a union.”
