Mainers among millions benefiting from new federal rule on medical debt

“This new rule will help more than 100,000 Mainers who hold medical debt, which in most cases was incurred simply for trying to take care of their basic health needs,” says Maine Center for  Economic Policy Analyst James Myall. “No one should need to take on debt just to access a basic human right, but it’s increasingly common. Medical debt is largely out of people’s control and it doesn’t really reflect their true creditworthiness, which is why it shouldn’t be included. This rule will at least reduce the amount of financial harm caused by our health care system.”
