Augusta, Maine (Thursday, May 31, 2012) Garrett Martin, Executive Director of the Maine Center for Economic Policy (MECEP) issued the following statement today in response to the Legislature’s failure to override Governor LePage’s veto of the $20 million bond issue for research and development.
“This is very troubling news for job creation and economic growth in Maine. More than 50,000 Mainers remain unemployed and preliminary data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Maine trails all but a handful of states in job growth over the past 16 months. The Legislature has allowed the Governor to abandon a truly promising opportunity this $20 million research and development bond issue offered to give Maine’s struggling economy the jump start it needs to grow and create good jobs.”
