Maine Center for Economic Policy (MECEP) State/Local Tax Policy Analyst Maura Pillsbury reacts to the overhaul of the senior property tax freeze program:
“We applaud the work of the Taxation Committee on this thoughtful policy solution to the poorly devised senior property tax freeze program. This eliminates the program enacted in the last legislature, which would have provided massive property tax cuts to millionaires owning waterfront homes and redirects those funds to better helping older Mainers who need them most. This expansion to the existing property tax deferral program and property tax fairness credit will help the most vulnerable older Mainers stay in their homes, which is what this policy set out to do in the first place. It does this by delivering a larger benefit to struggling seniors than the program it will be replacing.”
